Recently in our homeschool history class, we viewed a video about preserving your own history in clay pots. Then, we had Sandra Horton from Quilt House Pottery come to share with our class about her experience in pottery. She also had our kids make their own clay pots in which to store some of their special items.
Sandra began her lesson by telling the kids Genesis 1:27 and 2:7, how God created man is His own image from the dust of the earth, then breathed His life into him. Then, she moved to Jeremiah 32:14 and how God instructed the people to store their important papers in earthen vessels (clay pots) so they would last many days. Then, Jesus came along and things changed some. God prophesied that He would write His words upon our hearts, not tablets of stone, paper, or animal skins. In Proverbs 4:4, we’re told to let our heart retain His words. It’s repeated in Proverbs 3:3 and Psalm 119:11.

Sandra shows the kids how to make their pots.
Sandra went on to point out that WE are earthen vessels and are supposed to keep God’s Word in our hearts. She shared 2 Corinthians 4:7 how we have this treasure in earthen vessels that the excellency of the power may be of God and not us. We are to preach Jesus, not ourselves.
While she was here, she shared her story of how she used to be a nurse at Joy Ranch several years ago, then how God called her to rely soley on her pottery business for income.
We were thankful to have Sandra come to share with our kids, and she’ll be bringing their clay pots back after they’ve been fired in her kiln. The kids did a wonderful job with their pottery creations!
